From now on, you can use CE for sending emails using desktop email reading and sending programs, like Microsoft Outlook. It was not possible till now since some technical difficulties, such as the way we authenticate users against LDAP, were not resolved. You need to set up your email clients as our manuals instruct you, else it will -not- work.
The current setting will let you connect to the mail server via a SSL connection, and authenticate your self using your normal username and password, with "LOGIN/PLAIN" methods.
I have written a small "HOWTO" to guide you about the process of setting up your `Outlook Express` and `Outlook 2003` programs.
VERY IMPORANT NOTE:
For certain reasons, we have to use SSL for sending emails. But some internet security applications, such as Norton Internet Security 2005 or Norton Antivirus 2005 cause problems when you try to send emails through SSL. They try to steal the email from Outlook, for instance, and and then send it themselves when the scan results were negative. This upsets the SSL handshake process; resulting in a ''454 TLS not available due to temporary reason" server error.
So you have to set them up in a way that the emails you send to CE mail server are excluded from scanning. Some say that even this does not help them, and have to disable the whole NIS2005 for sending email.
Have a look at this: Sympatico and Norton Internet Security 2005.
If you have problems sending email, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, first of all re-check your set up process, see whether you have Norton or any other program that interferes in the email sending process, and then come to us for Why-does't-this-work-my-prof-in-MIT-is-waiting questions.
