Hardware description languages(HDLs) have been around for over thirty years but are

only recently emerging into the mainstream of digital design. The most popular

language is DOD's VHDL which is used for everything in digital system design from

specification, through hardware/software codesign, to ASIC design and logic

  synthesis.
