Computer literacy has become a necessity in the developed and developing countries. Sharif University of Technology (SUT) has three decades of experience in offering Computer Science and Engineering programs. The Department of Computer Engineering which currently is the sole center for offering various computer programs in SUT, is one of the top ranked departments in the country.

Sharif University of Technology has been a pioneer in offering computer program disciplines in Iran. In 1970, a Computer Science Group was formed in the Mathematics Department. The group offered a joint Bachelor degree in Computer Science and Mathematics. In 1972, Master of Science in Computer Science was added to the curriculum.

In 1987, the first independent Department of Computer Engineering was established. In this new department, the former Computer Science program and also the Digital program which had been run by the Department of Electrical Engineering were merged. In effect, the newly established department started its task by offering Computer Engineering (Hardware and Software) in both BS and MS levels.

In 1997, the first group of PhD students were admitted to the department. This greatly enhanced the research capabilities of the department. In 1998, the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics group was formed to offer an MS program in this field.

At present, the department has about 500 BS, 200 MS and 50 PhD students.
